      Art Chantry “thoroughly UNprofessional”

Art Chantry’s work, commonly referred to as quirky, shocking and sometimes disturbing, can be seen on record covers, merch, the walls of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art, Seattle Art Museum, the Smithsonian, and the Louvre. He rose as a mainstream pioneer in non-conformity and rebellious design during the 90’s “grunge” era when he worked as art director for an alternative newsweekly named The Rocket. Later, his ideas led him to the fledgling record label, Sub Pop, and further on to the garage rock record label, Estrus Records, where his style found a home. Art influenced an entire generation of young graphic designers in the northwest, and eventually across the country. In 2017, Chantry was honored as an AIGA Medalist for his contributions to graphic design. Today, he lectures and travels to present his work all over the world. He has contributed writings to a number of books about graphic design, and his own books, Instant Litter, Some People Can’t Surf,  and Art Chantry SREAKS (Speaks) are considered classics in their field. To this day, his hard-edge scrappy look can be seen everywhere from punk rock record covers to corporate annual reports. Join AIGA Alaska on Thursday, May 30 at 6:30 pm at Koot’s* for a lecture on the life and work of Art Chantry the “thoroughly UNprofessional” designer. *If you are under 21, you must bring your legal gaurdian.
